GOD OF THE UNIVERSE
In four English words which come from three Hebrew words, in the first verse of the Bible, we read of the declaration that there is a God. It reads like this: "In the beginning God." It is very evident all through the Scriptures and in life itself, that everything in the Universe had a Maker, a Creator. There is no attempt to prove the existence of God in the Bible - it simply declares that He exists. He who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a Rewarder of those who seek Him diligently. It is only the fool who has said in his heart, "There is no God."
If we are reasonable men and women, we have to admit that there was a beginning to the Universe, that it was designed by a super-intelligent, Supreme Being. How great is this vast Universe with its system of thousands and millions of galaxies! Each galaxy is composed of thousands and millions of stars. At the outer rim of one of these galaxies called "The Milky Way," is a star of medium size which is called the Sun. And this Sun is millions of times larger than our planet earth!
It is estimated that the number of galaxies composing the Universe is five hundred million million! Along with all this, our little planet earth, teeming with forms of life, reveals that there is an intelligence and a design to it all.
"The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament sheweth His handiwork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge." (Psalm 19:1-2)
Here we see that the heavens declare that there is a God and He is the One who has created them. The heavens, a part of the Universe, are a vast machine of many millions of parts. We are told that the Milky Way alone contains three hundred million suns! The one Sun that seems so near to us on a hot summer day is ninety-three million miles away!
Some of the stars in the heavens are so remote that it takes many centuries for their light to reach the earth, though light travels at the rate of one hundred eighty-five thousand miles a second! There had to be a mind, the mind of a Supreme Thinker, to have thought out such a machine to come into being and to work with such accuracy! Yes, there is a God whose tremendous mind planned it all, created it all, and sustains it all.
We see that there is design and beauty evident in the Universe. It did not "just happen." Common sense tells us this must be the work of a great Designer. If one would say that the Universe just came from some little ball of mud and the mud rotated at such terrific speed that particles flew off to form different parts which became the planets, the sun, the moon and the stars; if one would explain that the particles became earth, and then the earth formed the seas, then some particles became fish in the seas and these fish came up out of the water to walk on land, which finally became animal and man, and so on - wouldn't you say that was ridiculous? And where did the little ball of mud come from in the first place?
Yet there are some people who take it all in and believe such nonsense rather than the true account which we read in God's Word. Let me repeat the first verse of the Bible: "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." And along with this we read in the second half of the Word of God, in the book of Hebrews which was written primarily to Jewish believers in Messiah Yeshua:
"Through FAITH we understand that the worlds were framed by the WORD OF GOD, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear." (Hebrews 11:3)
Let me tell you a story: A person took his automobile apart piece by piece, stored it in his garage and locked the door. After a few days he went back to it, unlocked the garage door and stood there looking at the heap of auto-parts as though he was disappointed at what he saw. He had waited patiently, thinking that these parts would all come together as they had been originally, and that he would be able to enter the driver's seat, start the motor and drive away. RIDICULOUS! But that is just what that person is - who says there is no God.
That car had a designer, a builder, before it was taken apart. It needed an expert engineer-mechanic to put every part back together in its place so it could work efficiently. So it is that God is the Designer, the Creator of the Universe. To say there is no God is foolishness. It is as ridiculous as saying that the automobile can be put together by itself!
Not only man's moral nature, but his entire being testifies to God's existence. Even false religions of degraded men are but man's blind striving and groping for something that can satisfy him. When man hungers after God, that hunger cries out for someone or something that can fill it.
An argument for God's existence is found in the forty-second Psalm, the second verse which says: "My soul thirsteth for God." The soul of man would not deceive man by thirsting for something that did not exist.
Where do we find out about the Creator of the Universe? It is true we find Him in His creation. We also find Him in the Bible, God's Word to man. For it is not only in nature that God has revealed Himself, but also He reveals Himself in His Word. This Word of God, the Hebrew Scriptures and the New Testament, cannot be destroyed - cannot be broken. God's Word remains, and will continue. Heaven and earth might pass away, but God's Word will never pass away! It is interesting to know that the Bible itself predicts that there are those who will not believe. But even if there are those who will not believe in it, that does not alter the fact that it is true.
"For what if some did not believe? Shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect? God forbid: Yea, let God be true, but every man a liar." (Romans 3:3-4)
In the second half of the Bible we find another verse which is similar to the first verse in the Hebrew Scriptures emphasizing that there is a God, and that He was in the beginning of the Universe.
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. ...and the Word was made flesh and dwelt (tabernacled) among us...." (John 1:1,14)
You might say: "I do not understand this, therefore I will not believe it." Can you understand how a radish grows from a small black seed in black soil, yet when it comes to the surface of that soil the top of it is green, the body white - almost transparent, and the skin a delicate red or pink?
If you refused to eat anything until you could understand the mystery of its creation you would die of starvation! Just so, if you will not believe the mystery of God, the Word, and how He became a Man who lived among His people as Messiah Jesus because you do not understand it, you will also die of starvation - spiritual starvation. Won't you come to God right now, believe that He is and that He has sent His Word into the world and He is Yeshua, the Messiah of Israel, the Saviour of mankind?
Receive Him today!
